    NZ SUB ANTARCTIC     1

New Zealand Sub Antarctic

Kathy, with husband Tony, spent 13 days voyaging around the Snares, Campbell, Auckland, Antipodes and Bounty Islands in December 2021 with Heritage Expeditions, recording the astonishing fauna, flora and landscapes to produce a unique collection of prints. Not only was the subject matter so inspiring and vast but it also led to a new experimental approach for Kathy in her artmaking.

This series includes a variety of printmaking techniques, often combined in Hybrid prints, to evoke the Southern Ocean, the lonely, but raucously inhabited islands, the great albatross and colourful megaherbs. Some subjects are etched in meticulous detail, while others are suggested in gestural monoprints and collagraphs.

The work first showed as an installation exhibition in September 2023.

"CLOSE ENCOUNTER" VIDEO INSTALLATION

Landed Tucker Cove, Perseverance Harbour Saturday 4th December 2021. In cold grey skies, we climbed to Col Peak on continuous boardwalk, encountering Southern Royals at close range on several occasions. Making our own time, we stood in quiet wonder – filming, sketching, just observing for many minutes. The encounter with the Royal enroute to nest was eye to eye, both bird and human sizing each other up – no fear or flight from either party.

The party of four Southern Royals were uninterested in bystanders, courting on their minds. From Col Peak we gazed West down to Northwest Bay, Complex Point and Dent Island. East down Northeast Harbour and Cossack Rock in the Southern Ocean
